All road vehicles used for intermodal transport must be certified for rail transportation. On request, Hupac can codify the vehicles with the rail company to guarantee the compatibility between vehicles and rail cars for the selected itinerary.Customers who are planning to design specific vehicles for combined transportation may contact Hupac and request its technical support for the co-ordination with the vehicle manufacturer.

New ILU codes

In July 2011, a new coding system for loading units in combined transport in accordance with the EN 13044 standard was introduced. The ILU system is similar to the BIC code used worldwide for containers.

The new codification system distinguishes the owner identification from the operational marking requested for the rail operation. In case of a change of owner a new codification is not needed anymore. Furthermore, in future the codification with delivery of the yellow plates may also be carried out directly by the manufacturer.

The standard codes simplify the electronic data processing as well as the operational running and are compatible with the OCR systems for the automatic identification of the written characters.

Introduction of the ILU system

  • As of now, combined transport customers can apply for their individual owner code at www.ilu-code.eu.
  • All loading units must feature the new ILU code by 30 June 2014.
  • Within 30 June 2019 the existing yellow coding plates must be substituted with procedures which are in progress to be defined.
